Meetings to be held on EPA

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Cooperation in collaboration with the COMESA Secretariat will be organising, from the 23rd of July to the 3rd of August 2007, a series of meetings in the context of the negotiations for an Economic Partnership Agreement between the European Union (EU) and the Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) group of countries.

These meetings will consist mainly of Dedicated Sessions on Fisheries, Market Access, Trade Related Issues, and Development. The holding of a 12th Regional Negotiating Forum (RNF) will also be on the agenda.

The different Dedicated Sessions will examine in detail the comments received from the EU on the proposals submitted by the ESA in the different cluster of issues that are currently subject to negotiations.

The RNF meeting, which will be attended by negotiators at Ambassadorial and technical levels, will consider proposals from the Dedicated Sessions and will work towards reaching a consensus on the negotiating position to be adopted at the forthcoming joint EU-ESA Negotiating Session scheduled for September 2007.

Mauritius will assume the chairmanship of the RNF and the Committee of Ambassadors negotiating the EPA for the next 6 months.

The meetings will be attended by some 60 participants from the ESA countries namely, Burundi, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
