Cotton, the largest single component of yarn cost and typically accounting for 50% to 60% of the yarn cost, also determines to a great extent the quality of yarns produced.

However, the vast diversity of cottons, combined with the large variation inherent in fibre properties 'both within and between cottons' ever pose considerable difficulties and challenge to the spinners in selecting the right type of cottons for producing yarns of desired quality at optimum cost.

The present training programme aims to focus on the above and other crucial issues in the selection and grading of cotton, and assessment of its quality characteristics.

The criteria to be adopted for fibre selection for mixing, different grading procedures in use, usefulness of HVI and AFIS test results, the relative importance of various fibre properties with respect to different yarn properties, the problems of cotton contamination and stickiness and quality parameters of some major Indian and imported cottons are also to be covered during the programme.

Methodology:
Lectures, laboratory session, practical examples and discussions with participants. Specialist faculty from SITRA and experts from industry shall deliver the lectures.

Course topics:
• Cotton commerce - varieties, estimates, price, cotton marketing
• Properties of cotton, its measurement, grading and classification
• Interpretation of test results
• Cotton specification in HVI & ICC modes
