Textile, clothing & footwear stores sales volume fall, May to July

Underlying growth in retail sales volume remains firm, helped by discounting.

The sales volume in the three months May to July increased by 1.1 per cent compared with the previous three months. This follows 1.4 per cent growth in the three months to June and compares with 1.9 per cent growth at the same time in 2006.

Three-monthly growth in sales volume was 2.1 per cent for non-food stores. The highest three-monthly growth was for non-specialised stores (which include department stores) at 5.0 per cent – the highest growth for this sector since records began in 1986.

Sales volume for textile, clothing and footwear stores fell by 2.4 per cent, the lowest growth for this sector since December 1990. Total sales volume in the three months to July 2007 was 4.0 per cent higher than the same period a year ago.

Total sales volume increased by 0.7 per cent between June and July. Increases were reported in all sectors except for non-specialised stores, where sales volume fell by 0.3 per cent (the first fall in this sector since November 2006) and textile, clothing and footwear stores, where sales fell by 0.5 per cent.

The unadjusted value of retail sales for the three months to July was 3.9 per cent higher than in the same period a year earlier. The average weekly value of sales in July was £5.0 billion, 3.3 per cent higher than in July 2006.

Sales by non-food stores increased by 5.4 per cent over the year, compared with 0.4 per cent for food stores (the smallest increase in this sector since March 2000) and 9.8 per cent for non-store retailing.
