A unique business initiative developed by the University of Ulster could help budding fashion designers in the North West market their wares to a global market.

The North West Fashion and Textiles Cluster – a partnership between UU, the North West Institute and the Letterkenny Institute of Technology, funded by INTERREG - will link up with fashion and textile enterprises to develop new knowledge and new uses of technology.

The aim is to encourage fashion entrepreneurs to adopt a more creative approach to their businesses from design to distribution.

The initiative involves forming a cluster of clothing and textile companies based in the North West to help establish relationships between local, national and international firms.

Professor Dolores O'Reilly, Director of International Business Centre said, “We are aware of the global demands that have hit companies in the fashion and textiles sector especially in the North West. It is vital that existing businesses are encouraged to grow through new marketing initiative and new ways to do business. We hope to create new opportunities for businesses by harnessing the skill and talent that already exists. In essence, the programme will help local industry establish mutually beneficial relations within and beyond the North West region.”

Project Officer, Jayne Quigg added: “This is an exciting project to come to the North West which has been very successful in other countries. It will give local companies the opportunity to work with a well-known designer and make local, national and international links. A trade event will be taking place in Italy shortly where clusters have been in operation for many years. The University will be in contact with companies in the North West within the next six weeks to recruit.”
