Trade in Services will be at the focus of discussions during a two-day National Stakeholders Workshop organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Cooperation with the collaboration of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

In his opening statement this morning at Sir Harilal Vaghjee Hall, the Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. A. P. Neewoor, pointed out the importance of the services sector for the sustainable development of Mauritius in view of the current limitations and challenges faced by the traditional economic sectors namely agriculture and manufacturing. In a bid to keep the momentum of growth, Mauritius needs to move towards a service-oriented economy, he said.

On this score, Mr. Neewoor underlined the need for Mauritius to ensure adequate participation in both the multilateral discussions on trade in services that is at the level of the WTO, and at the regional level.

These negotiations will help identify the relevant market access opportunities for Mauritius' services exports and also attract the right expertise and foreign know-how in the country for the further development of the services sector.

The Secretary for Foreign Affairs further recalled that both the Southern African Development Community and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa have devised liberalisation strategies for trade in services.

Mr. Norbert Lebalé, Senior Economic Affairs Officer of the Trade Negotiations and Commercial Diplomacy Branch of UNCTAD, said that the Workshop will explore ways to improve the performance of six priority services sectors for Mauritius.

The state of play of WTO services negotiations including an appraisal of offers made to date and possible ways to improve Mauritius' offer will be reviewed.

“UNCTAD's analytical and empirical research clearly demonstrates that a thriving services sector is vital for all countries and there is increasing awareness of the role trade liberalisation can play in attracting foreign investment and enhancing exports” he said.
