Govt promises relief package for textile workers

The government on Thursday expressed serious concern on falling employment ratio in the organized sector and also promised for supportive package measures for workers in textile sector that have been loosing their jobs on account of rupee appreciation.

The aforesaid observations were made by Minister of State for Labour & Employment, Mr. Oscar Fernandes at ASSOCHAM-Friedrich Ebert Stiftung organized Conference on `Labour Reforms without Tears' here.

The Minister said that Union Labour Ministry would extend relief package for textile workers particularly in northern and western region in consultation with Textile Ministry. “The proposed package would be work out in next few weeks”, said the Minister.

Mr. Fernandes also expressed the government seriousness towards fall in the employment ratio in its organized sector which roughly is estimated at 7% and said that collective efforts were being put in to accelerate the pace of employment generation in the organized sector. It may be mentioned here that 93% chunk of employment is provided under various categories in the unorganized sector.

On the issue of contract labour, the Minister said that wherever permanent jobs are their, it would be the responsibility of the government to eradicate employment through contract and wherever the nature of jobs are temporary, the contract labour would be retained.

The Minister also called that wherever tragedies take place at places of employment, the employer is solely responsible for extending relief package and its responsibility should not lie with the contractor.
