Apparel, yarn & fabric exports rise by Sept

Exports of manufactured articles of the Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE) fetched Rs 27,974 million from January to September 2007, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office of Mauritius.

Export Oriented Enterprises is a new appellation covering enterprises previously operating with an Export Processing Zone (EPZ) certificate and enterprises manufacturing goods for exports and holding a Board of Investment certificate. This follows the promulgation of the Finance Act 2006 whereby no distinction is made between the EPZ and other manufacturing enterprises.

Export earnings for the first three quarters of 2007 actually increased by 16.3% compared to the corresponding period last year. The increase is mainly attributable to exports of apparel and clothing, fish and fish preparations and textile yarn and fabrics.

The United Kingdom, France and the USA remain the principal EOE markets, accounting for about 65% of total exports. Exports to these markets as well as to South Africa and Madagascar went up in the first nine months of 2007 compared to the corresponding period last year.

In September 2007, the workforce in EOE stood at 67,147. In June 2007, the number had been 67,250. At the end of September 2007, the 'wearing apparel' group employed 50,040 persons.

The number of export-oriented enterprises at the end of September was 409 compared to 416 in June and 463 a year ago. 'Wearing apparel' remains the most important group of the EOE with 182 enterprises in September.
