Last summer, the University of Akron (UA) teamed with The National NeedleArts Association (TNNA), based in Zanesville, to give 11 college juniors and seniors a unique opportunity to explore the fiber arts industry.

The Pathways in Professional NeedleArts (PiPN) program is now in its third year at the Akron, OH, university, with interest growing by leaps and bounds.

To satisfy grade requirements for their internship, the students had coursework, field work, a report on their experience and evaluations from both their professors and hosts.

Based on these criteria, several 2007 interns are being recognized this month for their outstanding work. Each winner receives a cash prize, as well as a copy of Needlework through History: An Encyclopedia, authored by Dr. Catherine Amoroso-Leslie, a PiPN professor from Kent State University, Kent, OH. The winning interns include:

Awards of Excellence:
High Honors:
- Sonja Holmgren of Akron, OH (UA), interning with Y2Knit (Funkstown, MD/San Francisco, CA) — hosts Susan Wolcott & Jill Wolcott
- Celia Williamson of Akron, OH (UA), interning with Pick Up Sticks (Oakland, CA) — host Maggie Pace
- Katie Bowser of Canfield, OH (UA), interning with Tanglewood Fiber Creations (St. Helens, OR) — host Trish Anderson
