Manufacturing sector posts double-digit growth in Jan

The sales value of the Manufacturing sector posted a double-digit growth of 14.8% or RM6.0 billion to RM46.69 billion as against RM40.66 billion reported in January, 2007. However, the sales value of the current month was down by 1.06% or RM0.5 billion as against RM47.19 billion reported in December, 2007.
The increase in sales value during the current month as compared with the corresponding month of 2007 was attributed to the rise in Refined Petroleum Products, RM2,592.3 million, Manufacture of Basic Chemicals, RM510.8 million and Manufacture of Office, Accounting and Computing Machinery, RM485.3 million.
Total paid employees engaged in the Manufacturing sector was 1,144,509 persons, an increase of 61,107 persons (5.6%) against 1,083,402 persons employed in January, 2007. Total employees in January, 2008 also increased by 4.0% or 44,536 persons compared to 1,099,973 persons in December, 2007.
Salaries & wages paid in January, 2008 increased by RM185.2 million or 9.2% from RM2,202.9 million compared with RM2,017.7 million spent a year before. The total amount paid in January, 2008 was down by 5.8% or RM135.1 million compared to RM2,338.0 million spent in December, 2007.
