Fabric production up 3.41% during Apr-December 2007-08

The Indian fabric production has continued its upward march over the last years. The total production during April-December 2007 is estimated at 40660 million square metres (MSM) recording a growth of 3.41% as against production of 39317 MSM during the corresponding period of last year. Going by the present fabric production trend, the 2007-2008 production is estimated to reach the level of 56767 MSM.

The production figures reveal that cotton fabric production which was to the tune of 19512 MSM during April-December 2006-2007 has increased to 20276 MSM during the current year while blended yarn production has declined to 5118 MSM during April-December 2007-2008 as against production of 5226 achieved during the corresponding period of last year. Meanwhile, the production of 100% non-cotton fabric has increased from 14579 MSM to 15266 during the period of April-December 2007-2008.

The sector-wise analysis of fabric production reveals that total fabric production in the mill sector decreased to 1308 MSM during period under review as against production of 1325 MSM during April-December 2007. During the period of April-December 2007-2008, the production of cotton fabrics in the mill sector was 924 (995); blended fabric was 304 (246) and 100% non cotton fabric was 80 (84) MSM.

The fabric production in the handloom sector was to the order of 5210 MSM during April-December 2007-2008 compared to production of 4845 MSM achieved during corresponding period of last year. The production of cotton fabric in the handloom sector during April-December 2007-2008 was 4558 (4232); blended fabric was 91 (71) and 100% non-cotton fabric was 561 (542) MSM.
