The Chemical Industries Association urged the Unite trade union to call off its strike action at the Grangemouth site. Chief Executive of the Association, Steve Elliott said "Ineos have done all that can be reasonably asked to solve this dispute and Unite should positively respond".

"Chemical businesses consult on pension scheme changes because they want to do all they can to make the businesses successful, which at the end of the day is the best and only way to ensure investment and jobs Businesses owned by Ineos have an excellent record in workplace relations and we hope and believe this matter will be successfully resolved.

He continued "I have a great deal of respect for Unite. Many of our companies, including Ineos, work with them on a range of issues and they have been supportive of chemical businesses in the UK who have to compete in a global market.

While negotiating necessary business changes, they have achieved good conditions for their members but I am afraid in this case they have it wrong and they should move their stance.

Ineos are a remarkable company that has led the way for the chemical industry with growth, investment and modernisation. Pensions are a sensitive issue we all understand that. Employers and trade unions throughout the UK, in the chemical industry and elsewhere, have worked together to make and implement necessary changes.

I call on Unite to get back to the negotiating table in a spirit of good faith, show strong leadership and a willingness to compromise. In the light of the company's offer to suspend changes to the existing workforce, pending the actuarial review, this strike is not justifiable".

Elliott concluded whether it be unions or employers a stance which says we can never change usually means no business and no job".
