Machinery export and import figures for Jan & Feb

The machinery industry of Taiwan is expected to grow at an annual pace of 8-10 percent in 2008. The average production of domestically made machinery may reach NT$96 million, up by 8 percent from the previous year. Besides, local demand for machinery will grow between 25-30 percent this year.

According to the statistics revealed by Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI), in the first two months of this year, Taiwan exported machineries worth US $2.538 billion registering a year on year growth of 3.7 percent.

While export of textile machinery touched $79.84 million, down by 17.7 percent, sewing machinery also saw a decline of 25.6 percent to reach $58.18 million. On the other hand, printing and leather and shoe making machineries recorded a surge of 20.1 and 40.8 percent respectively.

Some of the most promising destinations for Taiwan's machinery export turned out to be China and Hong Kong who ranked first by consuming $690.03 million worth of Taiwan-made machinery in the first two months of this year, plunging by 5.9 percent than the previous year and accounting for 27 percent of the country's total exports.

Second in the list was US with $388.13 million, down 8.7 percent and commanding 15.3 percent of the total. Japan ranked third with $150.81 million, up 0.4 percent and accounting for 5.9 percent followed by Germany with $100.82 million, up 30.8 percent. The fifth place went to Vietnam with $92.92 million, up an amazing 60 percent.Thailand stood at the sixth place with $73.54 million, down 6.3 percent.
