Clothing & footwear consumer prices higher in May

In May 2008 consumer prices 1.1% higher. Similarly to May last year, in May this year a relatively high monthly growth of consumer prices was recorded. Consumer prices went up by 1.1%, while in the first five months of this year they grew by 3.2%.

On average, goods were 1.4% more expensive while service prices increased by 0.3%. As regards goods, non-durable goods prices went up by 2% and semi-durable goods prices by 0.7%, while durable goods prices fell by 0.1%.

Higher prices of clothing and footwear: In May higher prices were recorded in the following groups: recreation and culture (by 1.3%), clothing and footwear (by 1%), miscellaneous goods and services (by 0.3%) and furnishing (by 0.2%).

Higher prices of petroleum products pushed the inflation rate up by 0.5 of a percentage point. Higher prices of seasonal products and other price increases each added 0.2 p.p. and higher prices of clothing and footwear contributed 0.1 p.p. each.

Only few decreases in May:
In May prices decreased only in the group communication (by 0.8%).

Annual inflation again slightly lower:
In May the price growth at the annual level fell back to the January level of 6.4% (in May 2007 it was 2.9%), while the 12-month average price growth grew to 5.3% (in the same period last year it was 2.5%).

In one year prices increased the most in these groups: furnishing (by 5.7%) and clothing and footwear and education (by 4.6%).

Compared to May 2007, goods were on average 7% more expensive while service prices went up by 5.1%. As regards goods, non-durable goods prices grew by 9.5% and semi-durable goods prices by 5.1%, while durable goods prices fell by 0.1%.
