In the first seven months of 2008, manufacturing production increased by 3,4% compared with the same period in 2007, but this was lower than the increase of 5,0% reported for the same period in 2007.
The estimated seasonally adjusted manufacturing production for the three months ended July 2008 increased slightly by 0,2% compared with the previous three months. Higher production levels were reported by four of the ten manufacturing divisions.
The estimated total value of sales of manufactured products at current prices for the three months ended July 2008 increased by 5,6% (R18 781 million), after seasonal adjustment, compared with the previous three months. Higher manufacturing sales were reported by five of the ten manufacturing divisions during this period.
Stats SA sees the introduction of a new sample drawn in April 2008 which replaces the previous sample that was drawn in 2007. The reported level of sales for the monthly survey of manufacturing for the months April to June 2008 based on the new sample was 0,5% higher than the level of sales from the previous sample.
