Shri Dinsha J. Patel, Minister of State (Independent Charge) assumed charge of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Addressing the media persons, the Minister said that the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) constitute a very important segment of our economy by virtue of their ability to generate employment and contribution to manufacturing output and exports. Keeping this in view, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises will strive to support MSMEs in every respect and address areas where MSMEs have been facing problems. He outlined the focus areas of the Ministry in the coming months, which include:
• Evolving mechanisms and structures for addressing the credit needs of the small enterprises, which are largely in the unorganised sector and which often get marginalised under the existing institutional funding mechanism. The Ministry would pursue the setting up of a separate fund for enterprises in the unorganised sector.

• To assist the micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in marketing their products, the Ministry would propose a procurement policy, which would entail setting up of targets for procurement by the Government Departments and Institutions from the MSE Sector.

• Keeping in view the requirement of enterprise development and skill development, the Ministry will strengthen its existing programmes and evolve suitable partnership models with the state government and private sector.

• To encourage employment in the urban and rural areas, emphasis will be laid on Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme.

• An overall review of the khadi sector will be carried out to bring in reforms relating to production and marketing, with the aim of empowering artisans engaged in the sector.

• All the schemes recommended by National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council for enhancing the productivity and competitiveness of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises sector will be operationalised in the coming months.
