The Western Australian Farmers Federation(Inc.)(WAFarmers) Wool Section welcomes the announcement that Australian woolgrowers voted for a two per cent levy in WoolPoll 2009.
WAFarmers Wool Section President, Kim Henderson, is pleased with the outcome of WoolPoll 2009, noting that a two per cent wool levy will enable Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) to make a difference to the profitability of the wool industry.
“Maintaining the current levy will provide AWI with adequate funding to provide programs which address wool industry needs and attract Government funding for marketing, research and development (R&D).”
“The two per cent wool levy will deliver AWI a projected income of $45.9 million, which includes a $10.6 million contribution from the Australian Government. Of this amount, 50 per cent would be spent on marketing; 20 per cent would be spent on off-farm R&D; and 30 per cent would be spent on on-farm R&D and extension.
“WAFarmers are now calling on AWI to use this funding wisely and invest in the future of the Australian wool industry.
“This is a positive step forward for the Australian wool industry,” Mr Henderson concluded.
