The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has asked those buying gold for the festive season to insist on `hallmark'-ed jewellery, the standard of purity set by the Bureau.

"Only 1,045 of the large number of jewellers in the country were selling `hallmark' gold and people must buy such ornaments as it guaranteed them full purity of the yellow metal", BIS Additional Director General Yashpal Singh told reporters.

The BIS has prepared a pilot project to open hallmarking centres in 40 districts of the country. At prsent there are 33 hallmarking centres working in the country out of which 18 are situated in the southern states, BIS Deputy Director General (Marks) S M Bhatia said.

There are eight authorised gold testing laboratories in the country and the BIS is also planning to open more laboratories soon, he said.

In India, every year 880 tonne of gold worth Rs 58,000 crore is imported, out of which 80 per cent is used for making jewellery, he said, adding BIS is mulling over making mandatory for the jewellers to sell hallmark gold.

According to BIS, 23 carat gold should have 953 mg of gold in it while 22c 916, 21c 875, 18c 750, 14c 585 and 9c 375 mg.

The BIS also organised a day long seminar here today for jewellers to raise awareness about the hallmark gold.
