PAF seeks three-month ban on cotton yarn exports

A total ban on export of cotton yarn for a period of three months, with immediate effect has been demanded by the value-added textile sector. Pakistan Apparel Forum (PAF) raised the demand at a meeting with Shaukat Tarin, Minister of Finance. All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) representatives also attended the meeting.
Nonetheless, owing to the boycott of APTMA members the meeting ended undecided. Federal Minister Rana Farooq Saeed Khan too attended the meet. PAF informed him that during previous month, exporters have exported around 56 million kilogram of cotton yarn, despite that, there exists a ceiling of 50 million kilogram per month.
Earlier the textile ministry had proposed a cap of export of 38 million kilograms of cotton yarn per month, which was not implemented, subsequent to which, the existing ceiling of 50 million kilogram per month on export of cotton yarn too came up, which too has been not implemented, was the lament of the PAF.
Finance Minister while speaking at the meeting opined of textile sector being a vital sector and that the government would not be willing to disturb it. Nonetheless, all the concerning issues of the sector will be sorted out through discussion with the stakeholders, but at the same time government will not arrive at any decision which is not in favour of the stakeholders, he added.
