State of Gujarat for the fifth time in a row witnesses the highest cotton production in the country. The production is likely to touch the 10 million cotton bales mark, which is a distant target for its nearest competitor, Maharashtra to achieve.

As per the figures of the Cotton Corporation of India, manufacturing of cotton in Gujarat reached 9.25 million bales by May 15 and they expect the same to reach the figure of 10 million bales by the season end.

In comparison, Maharashtra has recorded only 6.075 million cotton bales in the same period, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 4.9 million cotton bales. Gujarat therefore, accounts for nearly 50 percent of the nation's overall exports of cotton.

Earlier the government had imposed a month-long ban on the exports of cotton. However, the ban on cotton exports was lifted after the government witnessed a series of demonstrations made by the ginners, traders and farmers against the ban.

Therefore, traders, farmers and ginners have now, kept their fingers crossed, owing to modification in the overseas sales policy and the introduction of compulsory licensing. In addition, this matter will now be handled by the Commerce Ministry, instead of the Textile Ministry, and traders will have to procure their license from the Director General of Foreign Trade.

Till date, for exporting cotton, traders did not require any license; they had to only register their deals with the textile ministry.
