The Southern New England Textile Club will celebrate its 100th anniversary on Friday, June 4th, with a golf tournament and gala dinner. The dinner speaker will be former Providence, R.I. mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci. The event will be held at the Country Club of New Bedford, 585 Slocum Road, North Dartmouth Massachusetts.

The National Textile Association, the nation's oldest textile group, having been founded in 1854, congratulates the Southern New England Textile Club on reaching this milestone of 100 years of service and commaradery among the men and women of the textile industry of Southern New England

Since 1793, when Samuel Slater built the first successful water powered textile mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts grew to have one of the greatest -- probably the greatest -- concentration of texile mills of any place in America, or the world, by the early twentieth century when the Southern New England Textile Club was founded in June of 1910.

As the birthplace and first industy of the American industrial revolution, Southern New England's vital textile industry has the place of honor as progenitor of the entirely domestic U.S. manufacturing economy.

Southern New England continues to have a vibrant textile industry, with companies in every sector and market: wool textiles, high fashion apparel textiles, automotive textiles, textiles for home and commercial interiors, technical textiles, and flock. The yarn-making, fabric-making, fabric-finishing, and flocking mills of the region supply a variety of domestic end markets, including making a vital contribution to our national defense, clothing and sheltering our men and women in uniform. The textile industry of Southern New England is also and exporting industry, both to world markets for American products and to our trading partners in our hemisphere who use American-made fabric to product apparel for re-importation into the U.S.

Southern New England is also home to two stong textile programs at the University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth, a member of the National Textile Center Consortium and the University of Rhode Island. The industry in this region is proud to support these institutions through a number of endowed scholarships, student internships, and by hiring the graduates of UMass and URI.

The Southern New England Textile Club serves a very important purpose as a venue for textile women and men to meet in a social setting for exchange of information. It is safe to say that the industry in this region and its contribution to regional employment and the national economy, and the institutions of higher education serving the textile industry, all benefit in immeasurable ways from the presence of the century-old Southern New England Textile Club.
