With the objective of bringing back the golden fibres' lost glory, junior football players of the East Bengal Football Club will don jute blazers and jerseys manufactured from fabrics consisting of a blend of cotton and jute.

Jute Manufacturers Development Council (JMDC), which promotes the fibre and is an agency owned by the Textile Ministry, has joined forces recently with the sponsors of under-15 team of the East Bengal Football Club to promote garments made up of jute.

The key purpose of such a promotional initiative is to revive the jute fibre, which is cultivated in the state and offers livelihood to several thousands of workers in the labour-intensive jute factories. Introduction of nylon and polythene bags took toll on jute fibre, which was traditionally used to make gunny sacks and bags.

Continuous steps are being taken to promote the bio-degradable and eco-friendly features of the fibre, around the globe.
