An introduction to Navajo Weaving

12 Aug '10
2 min read

Explore the American Southwest weaving culture of the Navajo through the eyes of weaver Louise Castellan.

In her lecture, Ms Castellan will address the textile art of Navajo weaving from its historical roots to present day weaving practices. Unique artistic and technical methods related to vegetal dyes, continuous warp, spirit lines, section lines and regional weaving patterns will be described.

Along with saddle blankets, rugs and tools on display, a demonstration loom will be available for anyone interested in trying the Navajo way of weaving.

Ms Castellan first began weaving tapestries in 1982. After visiting the Navajo Reservation she was drawn to the artistry and beauty of Navajo textiles. She now specializes in weaving saddle blankets.

She currently resides in Bangkok and her travels throughout South East Asia focus on ethnographic photography of tribal weaving practices and equipment. She received a Master of Health Science degree from the University of Toronto and is currently working toward a Master Weaver designation.
