Floods may cause loss of 2.5 mn cotton bales - KCA

The flood situation in Pakistan has brought a situation of despair in the textile and its value-added sector. Almost the whole country has lost its basic infrastructure. This year the industry had projected a bumper crop and output was expected to reach record levels.
The biggest concern is for the value-added sector as after having faced yarn shortages and extremely high prices of cotton yarn in 2010, the apparel export sector was looking forward to a better situation in the next few months, on news of a bounty cotton crop.
Clothing exports from Pakistan are likely to be down by around one-third as orders for the upcoming Christmas season, which are placed in September, shift to other competitor Asian countries, over fears that supply will be disrupted, due to the havoc created by the floods.
As per the estimates made by Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) the regions of Multan, Shujabad & Jalalpur were estimated to produce 399,246 bales (1 bale=170 kg), now face a loss of 59,887 bales or about 15 percent.
Cotton output of Kot Addu, Muzzafargarh, Alipur, Khan Garh, & Jatoi regions were projected at 385,617 bales. These regions face a massive loss of around 67 percent. Tounsa, ShadanLund, Choti, DG Khan & Jampur areas were estimated to produce 328,681 bales and now, may lose 50 percent of these bales.
In the Mohammadpur, Fazilpur, Rajanpur and Kotmithan areas, the region was estimated to produce 464,321 bales and now face the likelihood of losing a colossal 76 percent of these bales.
Layyah Mehmood kot was estimated to have a cotton production of 187,939 bales and now faces loss of about 60 percent. Cotton output of Jhang Shorkot area was projected at 180,709 bales and may now lose about 30 percent of that crop.
Estimates for Mianwali and Bhakkar region were 76,711 bales and 79,470 bales, which now is expected to fall by around 27 percent and 46 percent, respectively. The crop in Rahim Yar Khan and Sadikabad regions was projected at 127,790 bales, which now stand to lose around 29 percent of that crop.
The cotton production projections for Dherki MPS & Ghotki areas were 287,040 bales, which will now dip by about 41 percent.
Sukkar, Khairpur and Noushero Feroz region are still in flood waters, due to which it is diffuclt to estimate the loss of cotton crop in those regions. Central Sindh areas like Nawabshah Sanghar, Hyderabad, Dadu Bhan, Saeedabad Sehwan Matli, Golarchi, Sujawal Mirpur, and Mirpurkhas have received heavy rains, but have not been flooded.
After doing a careful estimate of the loss of the cotton crop, the KCA has safely concluded that the total loss of cotton crop is around 2.5 million bales loss this year and production figure may not cross 11.5 million bales instead of early estimates of 14 million bales for the year 2010-11.
