The Indian textile industry can beat China in view of its unmatched entrepreneurial talent, said Shri Digvijay Singh, General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee, while addressing the leaders of the textile industry at an Interactive Meeting organized by The Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC), in Mumbai on 4th October 2010.

Shri Narayan Rane, Hon'ble Minister for Revenue, Government of Maharashtra, and Shri Naseem Khan, Hon'ble Minister for Textiles, Government of Maharashtra, were also present on the occasion.

Shri Digvijay Singh observed that since adequate focus was not given to the India's textile industry, the Chinese textile industry had overtaken Indian textile industry. However, he expressed confidence that Indian textile industry can cut costs and compete effectively with Chinese textile products, if adequate support is given and regulations are simplified.

In this context, Shri Singh said that the Indian bureaucracy should act as real facilitators rather than regulators and assured the textile industry of his support. He also pointed out that in the textile sector, the opportunities were immense and it was only a question of proper mindset to translate these opportunities into reality.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Shri Ganesh Kumar Gupta, Chairman of the Council, said that Shri Digvijay Singh had been a Chief Minister of the State of Madhya Pradesh for nearly ten years and is well-respected.

The SRTEPC Chairman informed that the Indian textile industry was one of the most important sectors of the country's economy, contributing 4% of GDP, 14% of industrial production, 17% of export earnings and is the second largest provider of employment, after agriculture, employing more than 35 million people directly.

Shri Gupta also pointed out that that the Indian synthetic and rayon textile industry was gaining importance and their exports were to the tune of Rs 18691 crores in 2009-10 and added that The Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council was making concerted efforts to enhance exports substantially in the coming years.

The Meeting was well-attended by leaders and stalwarts of the Indian textile industry, including Shri Vinod Kumar Ladia, Vice-chairman of The Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC), Shri R. L. Toshniwal and Shri Sanjeev Saran, former Chairmen of the Council, Shri Sharad Kumar Saraf, Vice president and Chairman of Western Region of FIEO, Shri Premal Udani, Chairman of Apparel Export Promotion Council, and Shri Amit Ruparelia, Chairman of TEXPROCIL, etc.
