A project to introduce solar charkhas in the country and manufacture green clothes is being finalized by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), which has developed a model of a solar charkha and is undertaking its field trials in association with the Gandhigram Urja Vikas Sanstha, Amravati and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Industrialisation, Wardha.

The product spun from these solar charkhas, under this ambitious project, would be named as 'green cloth' and sold in domestic as well as international market. Khadi, which is a hand-spun and hand-woven cloth, will now have technological assistance by means of solar power.

Around 100,000 such charkhas each costing Rs 20,000 will be introduced in the country every year, under the project. The new model of the charkha consists of solar panels connected to a battery that stores power.
