European negotiators continued discussions in Riyadh with representatives of the GCC on the EU-GCC free trade agreement.
The negotiators are hoping to make significant further progress on a number of elements of the draft agreement, notably those relating to services, investment, public procurement, industrial goods, infant industry, rules of origin and fisheries.
These latest negotiations follow a successful meeting in Brussels at the end of November.
If the gaps still existing between the two sides can be bridged over the next few weeks, Peter Mandelson, the European Commission for Trade, has said that he would be ready to make a detour to Abu Dhabi on his way back from the WTO Ministerial in Hong Kong in order to initial a deal in the margins of the GCC summit of heads of state.
