The Western Australian Farmers Federation (Inc.) (WAFarmers) has welcomed the announcement by Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) of a Board Nomination Committee appointed to assess the skills of those seeking election to the Board of Australian Wool Innovation in 2011.

The five-member Committee is part of a new process put in place under AWI's 2010 - 2013 Statutory Funding Agreement (SFA) with Federal Government and will comprise three external members and two AWI Board members.

Each member of the Committee has been appointed in accordance with the Board Nomination Committee Charter.

Acting WAFarmers Wool Section President, Ed Rogister, welcomed the announcement of the AWI Board Nomination Committee.

“WAFarmers has been advocating a skills-based board to the Federal Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries as well as the AWI Board over the past eighteen months which is now reflected in the Statutory Funding Agreement between the Federal Government and AWI,” said Mr Rogister.

“WAFarmers would like to see the Nominations committee assess the skill base of the current Board and communicate which skills are lacking.”

“Knowing which skills are needed on the board will assist shareholders to identify appropriate individuals to be nominated.”

The Committee includes external members Mr Colin Bell, Executive Chairman of Bell Financial Group Ltd, Mr Jock Laurie, President of the National Farmers Federation and Mr Will Wilson, General Manager Sales and Marketing, Australian Securities Exchange. Joining these external members will be the current Board Chairman, Mr Wal Merriman, and Deputy Chairman, Mr Roger Fletcher.

“WAFarmers would like to have seen more distance placed between the current AWI board and the nomination committee but at least it is a move in the right direction,” said Mr Rogister.

100 shareholder signatures are needed for a nominee to be considered by the Nominations Committee.

Nominations are required between 19 September 2011 and 7 October 2011 for the AGM to be held in Sydney on Friday 18 November 2011.
