Mohawk to close spun yarn plant in Floyd County

Georgia, US-based Mohawk Industries, a leading supplier of carpets and rugs, has announced closure of its spun yarn plant on Huffaker Road in Rome in last week of December.

The closure of the plant is to become effective from December 27 and it will affect around 227 employees, as per a notice issued under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act.

Mohawk Industries has, however, said it will identify new roles for the employees in other areas at nearby facilities. The company said it will also work with the Georgia Department of Labour to help its employees identify other local job opportunities.

The closure of Huffaker Road plant is due to the company switching from spun yarn to filament fibres. The move is being made as a cost-saving measure, as filament fibres are made from recycled plastics, which are comparatively inexpensive raw materials.

Mohawk clarified that it has no plans to stop operations at its Lavender Drive-based spinning mill in Rome. The firm also has operations in Summerville and Calhoun.

The closure of Mohawk's plant will result in a loss of nearly US$ 100,000 per annum in sewer and water revenue to the city of Rome in Floyd County.
