Mervyns gets prestigious retail community service award

Leading promotional neighborhood department store Mervyns was recently named a winner of the 2005 Women's Wear Daily/ExecTech Retail Community Service Award.
Sponsored by Women's Wear Daily (WWD), a leading national apparel trade magazine, the award pays tribute to the top five retail companies across the country who have a long history of involvement in worthy community causes such as youth outreach, enhancing education, cancer research, and natural disaster relief.
Mervyns received the award in recognition of its annual ChildSpree(SM) program which provides underprivileged children with a $100 back-to-school shopping spree for new clothing and shoes.
Each year, Mervyns' stores work with a local non-profit organization, school partner or youth assistance program from their community, who in turn select local children in need to participate in the program. In addition to the shopping spree, the children also receive a 10 percent discount on all purchases made during the event.
Originally created at one Southern California Mervyns store in 1991, ChildSpree exemplifies Mervyns' commitment to improving the lives of children and families in the communities it serves. Since becoming a company-wide initiative in 1992, Mervyns' ChildSpree has donated more than $17 million and helped more than 170,000 kids return to school with style, and feeling confident and ready to learn.
