Punjab is gearing up for a significant retail expansion with nine new projects expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Currently only two malls in about 270,000 square feet, experts anticipate the number of malls to go beyond 40 by 2010.

A study conducted reveals that Punjab's average consumption is much higher that that of all-India average in almost every retail sector, including clothing and footwear, and is expected to increase four times by 2010.

As this state also has the highest per-capita income in the country, it is emerging to be one of the most profitable venues for investment in infrastructure.

Private consumption expenditure in Punjab during 2004-05 was about Rs619,00 crore, accounting for almost 3.3 percent of the country's total private consumption income of Rs186,600,0 crore.

Leading retailers like the Piramals, Tatas, Rahejas, Godrej, S Kumars, RPG Enterprise, The Future Group with their mega retail chains like Crossworlds, Shopper's Stop, Pantaloon and Piramyd have all designed plans to venture into Punjab.
