Due to improved knitting machinery and low cost competition from overseas, Hawick Cashmere proposes to close its Eyemouth plant and cut 46 jobs.
As per Jim Thomson Deputy Chairman of Hawick Cashmere, because of new advances in knitting technology and flawless knitting only few people are required to manufacture a product.
The company will retain only about 21-25 people in Eyemouth and Hawick respectively.
It is said that company closure will have telling effect on the wrokers as they will ahve to adjust with this setback in their midway phase in as painless and as sympathetic way as possible, he added.
Thomson stated that although the company made luxury knitwear, it also made less expensive products during quieter periods. It is these garments, which have come under pressure from cheaper overseas competition.
Euan Robson Liberal Democrat MSP for Roxburgh and Berwickshire, expressed concerns at the impact over Eyemouth.
"Technological change in the industry led to whole garment knitting machines and the relentless competition from low cost, low wage overseas producers seems to have led to this very unfortunate development," he vented.
