UPM reports environmental performance in EMAS 2014

UPM has published the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) statements for the year 2013. The corporate statement and paper and pulp mill specific supplements are available on UPM web site: Responsibility > Principles and performance > Reporting. The corporate statement includes group-level information and core indicators on e.g. energy and material efficiency. The mill supplements deepen the corporate statement with local information, such as environmental targets and accomplishments. All data is verified by a third party.

“UPM’s environmental performance reporting is extremely comprehensive,” says Sami Lundgren, Director, Eco-labels and Reporting. “We have widened the EMAS scope to include also our non-European mills in China and Uruguay. We require the same environmental performance and transparency of operations from all our mills, despite the geographical location or country specific legal requirements. Our focus is on producing more with less energy, water and waste, and with lower carbon footprint,” he continues.

“We have also a good example outside Europe, UPM Fray Bentos in Uruguay, which is the only non-European EMAS registered chemical pulp mill in the world. Last year the mill achieved all of their environmental targets. For this year, the targets are even more ambitious, and everybody at the mill are committed to reach them,” Sarantola concludes.

EMAS is a voluntary environmental management system for companies and other organisations to improve, evaluate and report on their environmental performance on an annual basis. UPM has been in the EMAS scheme already for the last 20 years.
