Leading home furnishings supplier to major retailers Springs Global US Inc announced it will transfer its remaining U.S. weaving operations to its facilities in South America by 2007 in order to compete more effectively in a rapidly changing global textile environment.

The announcement affects approximately 700 employees at Katherine Plant in Chester, S.C., and 60 people at Frances Plant in Fort Lawn, S.C. The Frances Plant will close on December 1, 2006, which is consistent with the schedule announced when the facility was temporarily restarted this spring.

Katherine Plant equipment will be transferred in phases beginning in September 2006. Employee positions will be affected as equipment is moved. The process is scheduled to be completed during February 2007.

In a message to employees, Springs Global Co-Chairmen Crandall Bowles and Josué Gomes da Silva said, "The actions we are announcing today reflect both the positive and negative impacts of adapting to the current highly competitive industry environment. We deeply regret the loss of jobs in South Carolina and the impact on the lives of our employees, who have done an outstanding job of reducing costs and improving efficiencies. On the positive side, we are fortunate to have operations in South America that are both very competitive and have the ability to add capacity relatively quickly.

As a combined company, we have unique strengths in manufacturing, customer relationships, products and brands that no other competitor in the world can match. We will continue to leverage these strengths to ensure that Springs Global remains the world's leading supplier of textile home furnishings."
