Gujarat Ambuja Exports (GAEL), manufacturer-exporter of cotton yarn and processed products, is firming up plans to set up the country's first maize-based ethanol and extra-neutral alcholol (ENA) plant at Nashik.

Through the Rs100 crore plant that will be operational by September 2007, the company aims at catering to the automobile firms which use a blend of ethanol and petrol as an alternative fuel.

After commencement, an additional Rs225 crore will be pumped into the project which has a huge growth potential in the relatively less competitive field.

As against the annual national demand of around 455 million liters of ethanol, the Nashik plant will produce 500 ton per day (tpd) Maize-based ethanol and ENA.

GAEL is also expanding the capacity of its cotton yarn mill at Himmatnagar by adding 13,000 new spindles to the existing 60,000 spindles.

The company reported a turnover of Rs1294 crore last year and next year it targets Rs1600 crore turnover.
