Amital Spinning Corporation at New Bern is closing its textile business on September 29 discharging 35 of its 45 workers, declared Milt Gold, President.

Giving reason of the closure, Gold informed that the company was losing money steadily due to competition from Chinese goods.

Gold stated that textiles upheld North Carolina's economy for long, moreover, he added that like Amital other companies in North Carolina may meet the same fate if things are not changed.

Amital would set up a distribution warehouse using 300,000 square feet of good land across from BSH Home Appliance at 197 Bosch Blvd.

Jim Davis, Craven County Economic Director said that the Bush government had imposed federal trade constraints on garment imports but it was now too late for the fine business neighbor Amital.

Gold said he forced Warren Act provisions in April to assist Amital workers shift to new jobs from processing acrylic fiber and dying acrylic, chenille, polyester, etc.

Gold had received queries for purchase, but not put the unit for sale. He stated that local suppliers or customers would be unaffected by the closure.
