Calcot announces 2006 scholarship winners

Twenty California and Arizona students have been awarded Calcot-Seitz Foundation scholarship awards totaling $42,000.

Now in its 27th year, the educational foundation selected the recipients based on scholastic aptitude and performance, leadership potential, participation in extracurricular activities and financial need. Students must plan to study in an agricultural field at a four-year university.

Kristopher Welker, a student at California State University, Fresno in plant science, received the Julio Gallo award for $3,000. The Gallo award is a memorial scholarship established in the Calcot-Seitz Foundation by Visalia grower C.R. "Dick" Shannon in honor of the well-known California vintner killed in a traffic accident in 1993.

Robyn Ollerton, a University of Arizona student in ag business economics and management, and Kristin Kleiber, a graduate of Golden Valley High School in Merced, California, each received $3,000 for the Calcot Directors' awards. Directors' awards are funded by voluntary donations from honoraria Calcot directors receive for attending board meetings.

Jenna Clark, currently attending the University of Arizona and studying ag education and plant science, received a $1,500 Sheely scholarship award. The Sheely award is named in honor of a Calcot director and Arizona grower who died in a 1979 plane crash.

Other winners are Candice Harris ($2,000), currently enrolled in California State University, Bakersfield in biology; Nicholas Darr ($1,000), a graduate of Centennial High School in Bakersfield, California; Sarah Wenter ($1,000), a graduate of Caruthers High School in Caruthers, California; Sarah Walls ($3,000), from Selma California, and a graduate of Kingsburg High School; Justin Romeri ($3,000), a graduate of Chowchilla High School in Chowchilla, California.
