Cotton soil temperatures across six major growing regions are now available on the Cotton Seed Distributors Ltd (CSD) website.
CSD extension and development agronomist, James Quinn, said soil temperatures are monitored daily by the CSD E&D team and the data recorded on the web.
Historical data showing temperature trends since the planting season window opened are now available for the northern and southern Darling Downs, and the Macintyre, Gwydir, Namoi and Macquarie regions.
“Growers, consultants and industry agronomists should be aware that although accurate for the site where taken, this information should be used as a guide only, as soil temperatures will vary significantly by location, soil type and moisture status.
"The soil temperature at planting is one of the two key aspects in determining the success of the planting operation, the other being soil moisture levels.
“The ability to see what soil temperature are doing in their valley quickly and easily through the CSD website is of vital importance and value to growers and their advisers, especially in the crucial few days post planting," James Quinn said.
CSD plant pathologist, Dr Stephen Allen, noted recently that temperatures increasing from the high teens are generally positive signs, but temperature forecasts for the following 10 days are also important.
A recent Facts on Friday newsletter published also on the CSD website, said the optimum temperatures for germination are from 20- 25 °C.
The rate of elongation of the radicle (root) and the hypocotyls (leaves) is dependant on temperature, moisture, and also soil strength. Soil strength is a function of soil moisture, particle size and aeration porosity.
Generally, growth rate is greatest under increasing soil moisture, increasing temperature (up to 34.4°C) and decreasing soil strength.
