Pollachi coir industry strives to reclaim its glorious past

Pollachi in Tamil Nadu is located 40 kilometers south of textile city of Coimbatore. The city thrives on textile and coir industry.

This coconut town has abundant quantity of coconut husk and clean, long staple fibre. In China, the demand for coir mattresses has increased and this three-decade-old coir industry of Pollachi has caught the fancy of Chinese manufacturer.

Today, Pollachi coir industry can meet the fibre requirements of the Chinese manufacturer.

Fibre extraction units in Pollachi have also been very busy for the last couple of months.

Due to non availability of baling machines in the town, traders have to move the fibre to nearby Coimbatore and Tirupur where baling machines are available.

According to industry sources, at least 50 containers of the fibre have been shipped from Pollachi to China in the last two months.

A source from Sunco Exporters Pvt. Ltd. informs that the Chinese requirement of fibre is about 20,000 tons a year and the company can export 35 containers of fibre per day.

This has led to revival of dozens of closed mills in the region and farmers are a happy lot with this development. But, traders are facing acute shortage of labour.
