Taking the eco-friendly movement a step further, Scotland's finest wool spinner Smiths of Peterhead has drawn up a plan to build a new environmental-friendly textile factory early next year.

According to a Smiths official, the new 33,400 sq ft woolen mill will house dyeing and blending facilities, along with its own water treatment plant. The official added that even the design of the building has been structured on eco-friendly lines. The mill will use biomass to fuel its machinery. Rainwater will be used for processing and all solvents will be recycled.

Another top company official said the decision to go eco-friendly made sense because by adopting these means, even the company will save money.

Smiths of Peterhead showed its first organically-certified wool yarn recently. Around 40 jobs could be created at the new factory, once the mill's existing workforce of 75 has been transferred.

The green factory approach, said an official, embodies the idea of choosing alternative substances to the current chemicals used in dyeing. The basic plan is to develop the organic side of wool as a fibre and how it can be made more sustainable.
