Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson, Jr. visited Atlas Material Testing Technology in Chicago on Friday, September 14, to discuss the importance of trade and investment for U.S. job creation and economic growth.

The Secretary selected Atlas because of its growing involvement in international trade exporting products to 65 countries around the world including Korea, Colombia, Panama and Peru.

In his opening remarks, Paulson recognized Atlas' global contributions to the economy. "Atlas is an innovative company, founded in 1918, that manufactures equipment that simulates weather conditions sun, rain, heat and humidity for their clients who manufacture products, providing them the data needed to test their products' durability."

"Atlas continues to pioneer new methods of durability testing, and from its headquarters here in America's heartland, Atlas sells across the globe. Companies like Atlas... form the basis and promise of the American economy."

Over the past five years, Atlas has increased its exports from its Chicago facility by 12% on average each year. "We at Atlas are thrilled to find ourselves contributing in a more public way to the cause of international trade because it is critical to the success of our core business," said Russell Lane, president of Atlas Material Testing Technology.

Secretary Paulson noted the importance of passing the four pending Free Trade Agreements with those countries for U.S. businesses like Atlas.

"Globalization is here to stay and it's important that we continue to benefit from it rather than retreat into isolationism," Paulson said, noting a "rising protectionist sentiment in the U.S. and around the world."

Atlas recognizes this importance, as Lane notes, "Free trade agreements allow us to price our top-quality equipment competitively. Strong equipment sales enable us to grow and contribute to the industrial base of the United States."
