Roofing, composite decking maker ElkCorp, subsidiary Elk Technologies Inc (Elk) announced independent laboratory study has confirmed that its, fire barrier solutions, VersaShield line of fire barrier fabrics are non-toxic to humans.
Technology Services Group Inc, an independent consulting firm, (TSG) analyzed the ingredient information for VersaShield fire barrier and assessed the potential toxic exposure through skin contact and inhalation routes.
"The calculated exposure estimates for VersaShield fire barrier are below the toxicological benchmarks," said Dr. Gary Burin of the American Board of Toxicology. "It is my professional judgment that the use of the Elk fire barrier, VersaShield, as a flame retardant on mattresses results in no known health risks."
Elk's proprietary VersaShield coating formula utilizes no hazardous fire-resistant chemicals, relying instead on the product design characteristics to achieve the desired level of open flame protection. The flexible nature of the fabric and its non-toxic properties make it an ideal fire barrier solution for bed clothes, upholstery and mattresses.
Robert Pine, Executive Vice President of Elk Specialty Fabric Technologies, the ElkCorp segment that markets VersaShield fabrics said, "They want to reaffirm commitment to the safety of the VersaShield products to customers, the industry and consumers. The goal is to provide non-toxic, all-natural fire barriers for a variety of different environments where spray-on chemical fire-proofing just does not make sense. The soft, flexible fabrics are ideal for child-safe products."
