Eco-audit to expand VAUDE environmental program

VAUDE has always been strongly committed to protecting the environment and preserving it for future generations. VAUDE's numerous initiatives range from environmentally friendly production methods to the responsible use of its products in the outdoors.

Now the mountain sports supplier is taking another big step in environmental management: VAUDE is implementing an eco-audit with the goal of expanding its environmental program and continuing to improve the company's environmental track record.

Certification according to international standards should be achieved by the middle of 2008. To reach this goal, VAUDE has expanded its team: In September 2007, Hilke Patzwall became VAUDE's environmental protection officer responsible for the implementation of the eco-audit and planning the VAUDE environmental program.

The first steps within the framework of the eco-audit have already been put into place: VAUDE is taking part as a founding investor in the reforestation project BaumInvest (literally: tree invest) to replant eroded rain forest in Costa Rica.

With its dedication to BaumInvest, VAUDE is becoming actively involved in reducing global CO2 levels and at the same time, is compensating for a considerable share of the company's own CO2 output.

The BaumInvest project in Costa Rica is an innovative forestation model that is combining the ecological reforestation of 560 hectares of fallow forest with sustainable operations, humane working conditions and an economically sustainable perspective for native smallholder farmers.

90 percent of the acreage will be reforested with teak trees and endemic precious woods. Spices, fruit and herbs will be cultivated between the rows of trees. At least 10% of the acreage will consist of a nature reservation to guarantee a protected habitat for rare species of plants and animals.

By allocating micro-credits, indigenous smallholder farmers will have the chance to lease a section of land, manage it independently and to market the products cultivated with the support of BaumInvest.

Greenhouse emissions will be compensated for by BaumInvest reforestation in Costa Rica. Each newly planted tree binds harmful carbon dioxide and contributes to the reduction of CO2 concentration in the earth's atmosphere.
