Signage has been installed and the countdown is on at a Craik farm where an exciting biotech breakthrough means the farmland will produce a new, low cost and environmentally sensitive hemp fabric called Crailar.

As soon as 2006, a partnership between Vancouver based Hemptown Clothing and the National Research Council (NRC) could yield Canadian grown industrial hemp as an alternative to the $25 billion cotton industry.

Hemptown Clothing CEO Jerry Kroll said that they are so proud to be working with the people of Craik and the NRC on a project that will fundamentally change Canada's position in the world of apparel production. Worldwide cotton yield is worth more than $25 billion and none of that comes from Canada. Hemp will change everything!.

The new technology will produce millions of bales of organic, fluffy white fiber, projected to cost less than regular cotton, grown in areas of Canada which have never before had an economic stake in the billion dollar fabric industry. In addition to economic benefits, Crailar is highly environmentally sensitive, grown organically without the use of pesticides or the enormous fresh water irrigation required by conventional cotton.

Craik Mayor Rod Haugerud said that the huge economic potential for this technology is just becoming apparent. This should become one of the largest cash crops for Canadian farmers and will have a dramatic economic impact on agricultural communities from coast to coast.
