Leading chemical producer Sasol has received the National Association for Clean Air (NACA) Industrial Award for significantly improving its air emission control and overall environmental performance at its Sasolburg operations.
Tony Stott, President of NACA stated that Sasol is a worthy recipient of their Industrial Award since it removed hydrogen sulphide odours from Sasolburg, significantly decreased visibility of the stack, while course ash piles are decreasing at a rapid rate and hydrocarbon releases have reduced by more than 50 percent.
In June 2004, Sasol started utilising natural gas, supplied via its US$1.2 billion natural gas venture in Mozambique, which resulted in significant environmental improvements, as well as a significant reduction in resource utilisation. Sasol traditionally used coal based feedstock during the production of steam, electricity, gas and several petrochemical products.
With the introduction of natural gas, Sasol has since reduced carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide emissions by 47 percent and 100 percent respectively. In addition, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide species emissions have both declined by 17 percent.
Furthermore, resource utilisation has also decreased significantly, with coal usage declining by 75% and raw water and return water usage reducing by 20 percent and 22 percent respectively.
Pat Davies, Sasol's CE informed that they are delighted by NACA's recognition of their endeavours, since it underscores both their philosophy to embrace environmental sustainability as a core business imperative and their commitment to continually minimise the impact of their operations on the environment.
