Leading wool exporter now branches out into auctioning

Segard Masurel, a global wool company, which has exported New Zealand wool for nearly 101 years with paramount operations in Australia, Belgium, France and South Africa, will commence its own wool auction next month as part of the strategy to provide wool growers with new alternatives.

The first Masurel Direct catalogue will go to auction in Napier during September but in addition to an interest in auctioning, the company, which directly buys huge quantities of wool from farmers, will continue to offer farmers shed selling and long term contracts at fixed or indexed prices.

This new initiative is essentially an expression to the dissatisfaction of wool growers with regard to the dampened prices of the fleece in the recent years. Segard's expansion through auction also promises that its supporters would receive greater feedback from local and international mills who will also take account of price premiums.

This apart, the new initiative would also provide wool growers with an option to auction wool apart from the traditional practice of selling wool directly from the farm.

Segard Masurel is one of the leading wool exporters of New Zealand with an annual turnover of around 200,000 bales in three key markets including domestic carpet manufacturing, China and Northern Europe. However, the company also has a diverse range of clients in another 40 countries.
