The elegant and exuberant Mysore sarees that once adorned the royal women of the region will soon be displayed in a museum, for the onlookers to get enticed by their sheer splendor. The land for developing the museum has been selected and is close to the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation's (KSIC) silk factory.

Maharaja of Mysore had set up the KSIC unit 96 years ago and with just four years left for the centenary celebrations, KSIC plans to set up the museum to dispaly the sarees favoured by the royalty in yester years.

The officials are planning to request members of the royal family to give some of the priceless and heritage sarees for showcasing them in the museum.

The authorities of the factory are also planning to have an exhibition of photographs that will show the cocoon-to-fabric process of making Mysore silk along with demonstrating the process live in the factory for the visitors.

The KSIC will buy heritage sarees from all those who have inherited this garment from their ancestors. They are even planning to approach Princess Parvatibai of Travancore, who is said to have a collection of Mysore silks that were inherited from her grandmother.

What makes Mysore silk different from others, is its double-twisted yarn, which gives it a grainy effect, giving it a complete different texture from other varieties of silk available in the market.

A typical traditional Mysore saree can be differentiated from the rest as it has only one layer of zari running along it and has a simple zari-filled pallu. This standard has been maintained since 1912 when the Maharaja had set up this silk factory.
