Toray Synthetic Textile Cluster announced that it has succeeded in developing Super “Parel,” a polyester lining with high antistatic properties even under low-temperature, low-humidity conditions prone to static electricity.

The new product will be launched for the fall-winter season of 2008 as a new highly functional lining using the sales channels of Toray Industries, which has a major share in the lining market. Toray Synthetic Textile Cluster expects to sell 3 million meters of Super “Parel” in the first year and 6 million meters per year in three years.

Super “Parel” was developed based on a new special antistatic yarn developed by Toray Industries. The yarn has high concentration of a proprietary antistatic agent, developed after long years of research on controlling static electricity, kneaded into it. Normally, it's hard to knead high concentration of any heterogeneous component into synthetic fiber during manufacturing, as it could be a major impediment to stable production and quality.

Toray Industries succeeded in developing this yarn by leveraging its abundant experience in the development and manufacture of polyester fiber as well as by using wide-ranging production technologies including its proprietary polymer technology, polymer modification technology and yarn production.

The advanced weaving as well as dyeing and finishing technologies possessed by Toray Synthetic Textile Cluster participants were brought together repeatedly to identify the conditions necessary for stable high-quality production of textiles using this yarn. This enabled it to build a comprehensive production structure for lining applications starting from fiber spinning to high-level processing.

Led by the Nanotech Materials Sub-Cluster of Toray Synthetic Textile Cluster, efforts are underway to further improve the quality and add other special features by combining special processing methods currently under development. Going forward, the Company plans to expand product development beyond lining application into outer materials including sports and casual wear.

The existing antistatic materials, though effective at 20'C with relative humidity of 40%, the standard set by Japan Industrial Standards (JIS,) generally do not display antistatic properties at much lower temperatures and humidity levels. Super “Parel” on the other hand maintains a high level of antistatic qualities even under the much harsher conditions of 10'C and relative humidity of 10%. The product therefore is capable of responding to drastic changes in climate and can reduce the uncomfortable crackling and clinging of lining caused by static.

The new product will enable Toray Synthetic Textile Cluster to expand the sales of advanced lining materials globally in cold and dry regions of Asia, North America and Europe.

Toray Synthetic Textile Cluster and Toray Industries are committed to the continued development of new products with superior functionalities and qualities exploiting the high-level technological prowess of Japanese textile industry and introducing such products into the global market.
