Textile Design Graduates of Pearl Academy of Fashion organized Thread Works '09 – an exhibition showcasing their final graduating works at Stainless Art Gallery, Mathura Road, New Delhi on June 1st & 2nd, 2009. The exhibition, which was inaugurated by Shri Rajesh Pillai, Country Head, Kaybee Group, was widely appreciated by the visitors, many of whom were from industry interested in hiring talented youngsters.

The gamut of subjects explored by the graduate designers ranged from philosophical (Existentialism) to religious (Agama) to mundane and highly relevant burning issues (Terrorist attack on Mumbai). One of the collections which had “Numerology” as its theme incorporated different mediums, characteristics and features associated with numbers to develop furnishings for “Hotel Rooms of Commonwealth games 2010”.

This range was a creative surface ornamentation for hotel rooms. On the other hand the theme Urban Vintage looked back to existentialism with unique styling created by combining unexpected elements in form, color and material. The range reflected the art of gathering and reshaping, thereby creating 'vintage' items in 'contemporary' look. This range comprised knitted home furnishings for a drawing room story.

Another collection used spiral forms to give the furnishings a Celtic look. One widely appreciated range used Bharatanatyam and Odissi dance forms to bring vibrancy to drawing room décor. The competition was so tough and the collections so beautiful that the judges for the event Mr. Deepak Chakravarty – Head Designer ITC & Ms. Shiva Kaul, CEO, Attira Designs had a tough time deciding the winners.

The Textile Design programme at Pearl Academy of Fashion develops practical skills, creative judgement and professional confidence in designing, making and evaluating textiles among the students. The programme helps develop the expertise to combine traditional materials and processes with innovation in order to provide exciting and contemporary materials-based textile design in print and weave. Studio work encourages student-centered learning and helps in building self-reliance, encourages experimentation and promotes enthusiasm for the field of textiles.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. AKG Nair – Group Director, Pearl Academy of Fashion said, “Textiles feature in every aspect of our daily life and textile designers have the opportunity to shape fundamentally the way we live. This practice led programme is designed to initiate and encourage change and innovation in the designing of textiles. Through 'Thread Works' exhibition, the celebrated textile designers observe students' creations and the industry looks out for prospective creative talent for absorption in their design departments or to engage them in freelance capacity.”

The design programmes at Pearl Academy of Fashion cover areas that aim to inculcate in the students the ability to visualize and represent ideas and concepts, understanding and application of design fundamentals, understanding of material and material manipulation, understanding of cultural manifestation and contexts, and their relevance to design, effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
