The denim industry in India took off after the nineties. Major textile manufacturers like Arvind Mills, KG Denims, Aarvee Denims, Malwa Cotton and Century Textiles etc set up big capacities of the fabric in India, on the back of an increasing global and domestic demand for the fabric. But the economic crisis which has affected the textile sector deeply may also have affected the denim industry. Fibre2fashion in its quest to know the impact on this vital sector, which is the single largest export product category from the textiles sector, spoke to Mr Balkrishna CEO, KG Denim Ltd.

KG Denim is a premier denim and apparel fabric manufacturer, whose products are well sought after by leading jeanswear makers, fashion brands and retailers worldwide and is part of a textile group having annual turnover of US $150 million. The company manufactures; 24 million meters of denim fabrics, 12 million meters of cotton fabrics, 2 million equivalent sheet sets of made-ups and 3 million units' of jeans & trousers.

We began by asking him as to how big is the impact of the crisis on the denim industry in India, to which Mr Balkrishna said, “The whole of last year had gone with the recession which affected the denim industry badly thereby reducing the fabric sales. The mills were under utilized for most of the period last year and the trend has continued till March 2009”.

The domestic market has already picked up the tempo and we are expecting a good demand from the brands and exporters across India for the next four months. The overseas market too has opened up and the orders have started coming in and we expect this trend to continue through the whole of this year”.
