J&K handicrafts witness 15% improvement in sales

The 115th meeting of Board of Directors of J&K Handicrafts (S&E) Corporation was held recently in Srinagar, chaired by the Minister for Industries and Commerce Mr. S. S. Slathia, wherein the Board has noted that there is a growth in Corporation's business since past few years and the sale of handicrafts in first six months of the current financial year (2009-10) has recorded an improvement of 15 percent as compared to last year's corresponding period.
Handicraft sales of the Corporation between April and September of 2009-10, stood at Rs. 41.2 million, against Rs. 35.8 million during the same period of previous year, which is a 90 percent achievement of Corporation's sales target for the first six months.
The Board has taken a decision to space out partial sections of some handicraft items on consignment basis in some branches such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, in order to aid help to the artisans and to generate more revenue by improving sales of handicraft items.
It has also decided to modernize and renovate Corporation's showroom of Kashmir Government Arts Emporium 'Zoon' through R&B department, Jammu at a cost of Rs. 17.5 millions as well as to computerize business operations of all the branches in order to raise the sales and revenue of the Corporation.
The Minister asked the Corporation management to take effective steps to generate more business in the larger interest of the handicrafts sector, which offers employment to a large number of people of the state, specifically artisans and crafts persons.
He further emphasized that the world famous glaze and heritage of Kashmiri Handicrafts need preservation and protection from imitation and replication.
